Ago Forcibly Picks Up Chevron's Bio-Remediation Suspect

Jakarta, (Antaratiau.com) - The Attorney General's Office has forcibly picked up suspect in the alleged corruption case in the Chevron Pacific Indonesia's bio-remediation project Bachtiar Abdul Fattah, from his house in Jakarta.

Bakhtiar is a suspect who had previously been freed after the judge stated that he was innocent.

The forcible picking up of the suspect by prosecutors was done on Friday (17/5) at around 08.00 pm. The suspect was taken to the Attorney General Office in connection with the investigation of his case.

The Attorney General Office had earlier named seven suspects for corruption in the bio-remediation project.

Five of them have been declared guilty in the court of Corruption (Tipikor) in South Jakarta.

Attorney General Basrief Arief on Tuesday (14/5) admitted that he would summon suspect Bakhtiar Abdul Fatah again to speed up the legal process of his case.

In the previous corruption trials, two of the seven suspects were proven guilty in the case.

The head of the Center for Legal and Information of the Attorney General Office, Setia Untung Arimuladi, said that Bakhtiar Abdul Fatah would be summoned again for the sake of the rule of law.

Earlier, the defendants in the case accompanied by their lawyers reported a variety of irregularities related to their verdicts to the Prosecutor Commission (Komjak) and the Judicial Commission (KY).

By some legal observers the case has been considered a form of criminalization that would pose serious threats to national oil and gas investments.

Other observers meanwhile claimed that the forced disclosure of the case was a serious threat to environment around the areas of oil and gas industries considering that since the case emerged to the media, some of Chevron's waste management systems had been halted. ***2***
