Siak, Riau (Antarariau.com) - The Sarana Pembangunan Daerah (SPS), a company owned by the district administration of Siak, Riau, in cooperation with PT Biomass Energi Hijau plans to build a factory to generate energy from the waste of palm oil processing plants.
The liquid waste would be processed to turn out feed stock for bio-diesel, soap, and fertilizer and as fuel for boiler functioning to drive turbine of power plants, Director of SPS Bob Novitriansyah said here on Saturday.
Bob said PT Biomass Energi Hijau (BEH) will soon build a factory and a power plant fueled with biomass in the Industrial Estate of Tanjung Buton (KITB).
He said PT Biomass has been consistent in developing environmentally friendly industry such as by utilizing palm oil waste.
Meanwhile, Siak Regent Syamsuar, said SPS would be the sole supplier of palm oil waste both liquid and solid waste for the factory to be built by PT Biomass.
The regent said the cooperation in energy development would contribute not only to preservation of the environment, but also to economic development in the district.
The regent asked all palm oil processing factories in that district to take part in contributing to the success of the project.
SPS and PT Biomass already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on March 8, 2017, he said.
"Palm oil waste both liquid and solid have commercial value . Therefore, I ask all palm oil processing plants in the district to sell their industrial waste to SPS," he said.
He said he hoped the Tanjung Buton Industrial Estate being built in the regency of Siak through the cooperation, could be fully used to open jobs and boost economic development in the district.
He said he is optimistic implementation of the project would benefit the district administration and the palm oil processing plants.
Riau including Siak is the country s biggest producer of crude palm oil with large oil palm plantations.
Earlier the Directorate General of Renewable Energy and Energy Conversion (EBTKE) of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) announced a program to generate electricity from liquid waste of palm oil mills.
"We are planning a special mandatory program to utilize Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) to generate electricity. Palm oil factories would be required to convert POME into electricity," EBTKE Director General Rida Mulyana said in a function on "Biogas and Waste to Energy Indonesia Forum 2017" here last week.
Rida said the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) is discussing regulation with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry obliging palm oil factories to utilize POME to generate electricity.
He said there are more than 800 palm oil plants in the country mainly in Sumatra and Kalimantan turning out liquid or solid waste.
Solid waste of palm oil could be processed to produce biomass energy , and liquid waste, which contains methane could have been processed into bio-gas, he said.
"As long as palm oil factories run, there would be waste in the form of liquid containing methane. If the waste is burned, the methane would cause air pollution and methane is 21 more hazardous than CO2," he said.
He said the program would not only commercially beneficial but it would be in line with the government commitment to reducing carbon emission.
