Pekanbaru, Riau, (Antarariau.com) - A total of 224 people are undergoing treatment for infections and problems in healthcare centres in Pekanbaru, Riau province, in view of forest and land fires in the region.
"They are being treated and given free medications," said head of Pekanbaru's health service Dr Rini Hermiyati on Friday.
People are being treated for pneumonia, cough, asthma, and eye and skin irritation.
According to Rini, the number of patients has increased from 144 on Thursday to 224 on Friday.
She added that the air pollution standard index on Friday morning went above 200, which is considered dangerous.
"This means that those exposed to polluted air could be at risk of health problems. The situation, meanwhile, is compounded by high temperatures," she said.
Rini noted that more than 50 percent of the patients are children, while the rest are 15 years and above.
She said patients are allowed to go home but have been advised to remain indoors and drink sufficient water. Those suffering from skin irritation have been given proper medication.
She has urged principals of preschools and elementary schools to close their premises because of the current situation.
People have also been advised to cancel outdoor events until the quality of air improves, she said.
She added that in the last few days, her office has distributed 1,600 masks to school students and adults.
Efforts are being undertaken to fight forest fires that have resulted in high volumes of smoke.
