Pekanbaru, Riau, (Antarariau.com) - The Pekanbaru district court sentenced a Malaysian to death for smuggling 46.5 kilograms of methamphetamine via the port of Dumai into the country.
Police arrested Ng Hai Kwan alis Jimmy (50) together with two women identified as Y and TSN from his hotel room in April and seized 46.5 kg of the drug worth Rp180 billion on the street.
"The court found the suspect guilty and decided to punish him with death sentence," presiding judge Amin Ismanto read the verdict on Tuesday.
The sentence was as demanded by the prosecutor last week.
The lawyer of the convict said they would appeal the verdict.
The two women Y and ISN were later released by police as they were found to be not involved in the smuggling.
Jimmy told the court that he was only a courier carrying the drug from Malaysia to Indonesia via Dumai with a payment of Rp5,000 Malaysian ringgit.
Indonesia under the present government imposes heavy punishment against drug trafficking.
Earlier this year the government executed more than 10 foreign drug convicts drawing sharp criticism from a number of countries.
