Pekanbaru, (Antarariau.com) - A Malaysian, Ng Hai Kwan, is facing death sentence on charge of drug smuggling in a district court here on Tuesday.
The Riau high prosecution office demand death sentence for Ng Hai Kwan alias Jimmy alias Ati in a court for allegedly tried to smuggle 46.5 kilogram of methamphetamine.
Prosecutor Zainal Effendi maintained death sentence demand for the suspect after hearing a plea read by the suspect lawyers.
The lawyer of the suspect Wita Sumarni said witnesses confirmed the suspect was not aware that two travel bags he carried contained the drugs worth around Rp180 billion in the street.
He is only a courier paid to carry the bags from the Port of Dumai to Pekanbaru.
Police said the suspects stayed at a hotel in Pekanbaru and planned to continue to Palembang with the drug.
Police arrested the suspect and two women identified as Y and ISN at the hotel.
Indonesia adopts tough measure against drug smugglers or traffickers.
President Joko Widodo has said he would not give clemency for drug convicts.
This year the country already executed more than ten drug convicts.
