Dumai, Riau, (ANTARA) - Dumai police havedetained 11 Iraqi nationalswho had arrived at a small port in Medang Kampai sub district in a motorboat withoutlegal travel documents.The police had arrestedthe 11 Iraqis after receiving a tip-offfrom local residents early Wednesday morning,Dumai police spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Dawid Sianturi said.

The local residents hadreported that a speedboat full of unidentified foreigners had entered one of the small ports in Medang Kampai Sub-district, he said.

Soon after receiving the information, six members ofthe local police forcewere sentto the port, located at the Selingsing river, he said.

"It turned outthe speedboat was carryinga number of male foreigners who did have any legal travel documents," he said.

The Iraqis were then brought to the Dumai Police office where they were interrogated abouttheir intention in coming to Indonesia.

"The 11 Iraqi people are still in the process of being interrogated concerning their intention in coming to Indonesia via theDumai coast," he said.

The 11 Iraqis were identified as Muhammad Ali Shalman (33), Jabbar Mattabar Muhammad (38), Safa'a Muhammad Jawad (43), Abdullah Mahdi Rasoul (34), Abful Salam Jusein (22), Mousa Sehala Khuddair (44), Ahmad Hameon Muslim (39), Moseam Zoen Husein (35), Suela Asad Al Muhsen (28), and Shalf Atea (40).

One of the Iraqi immigrants, Muhammad Ali Salman, who was from Baghdad said t his country was inthe middle of a civil war that had disrupted their lives.

He and his fellow Iraqies hadcome to Indonesia to request asylumand permission to stay in the country , he said.

Before coming to Indonesia,theyhad been livingin Malaysia.
