Pekanbaru, Riau, Jan 22 (Antaranews Riau) - The Rokan Hilir Police in Riau Province have managed to foil an attempt to smuggle 15 kilograms (kg) of crystal methamphetamine from Malaysia.

The meth was wrapped in 15 Guanyiwang green tea packages bearing Chinese characters, with each package weighing one kg, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Sigit Adiwuryanto, Rokan Hilir Police chief, stated here, Tuesday.

The illicit drugs were seized from the residents of Rohan Hilir, identified by their initials as AS, 32; JM, 23; and RH, 34, in Pasir Limau Kapas Sub-district, Rohan Hilir District, last Friday (Jan 18).

AS admitted to have used a traditional boat to pick up the meth from Malaysia.

The police later arrested JM and RH, who were about to deliver the meth to Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau, aboard a van.

The authorities had investigated the case for three weeks prior to success in seizing the 15 kg meth.

The coastal areas of Rohan Hilir, Dumai, Bengkalis, Meranti, and Indragiri Hilir are popular routes for illicit smuggling of drugs into Indonesia from neighboring Malaysia.

Last year, the Riau Police had managed to seize a total of 325 kg of meth in 1,625 cases, mostly smuggled from Malaysia, which is a transit country for illicit drugs coming mainly from China.
