Village Heads Should Monitor Drugs Distribution: Security Minister

Pekanbaru, Riau, March (Antarariau.com) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan has asked all village heads in Riau Province to monitor the distribution of drugs in their areas since they know the movements of their residents.

"The village heads should check their residents, if (some of the residents) shook heads for no reason, it should be suspected to be linked with drugs," the minister stated during his visit here on Wednesday.

Luhut noted that 30 to 50 percent of the 5.9 million Indonesian people identified as drug users, died due to drugs.

According to the minister, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), after holding a meeting last week, asked all parties, including the government, law enforcement personnel, and the village heads to help eradicate drug distribution.

"Village heads, sub-district military chiefs, heads of police precincts, regional legislative assemblies, and all elements of the community, including religious figures, must be on the alert against drugs," Luhut noted, adding that some 70 percent of the drug operations are operated from prisons.

In the meantime, Pekanbaru mayor Firdaus stated that his officials have taken several measures to eradicate drug use.
