Pekanbaru, Riau (Antarariau.com) - The Terra and Aqua satellites detected 29 hotspots across Sumatra Island on Sunday, slightly up from 27 hotspots on the previous day.
Of the 29 hotspots, 13 were found in South Sumatra, nine in Bangka Belitung, and nine in Lampung, spokesman of the Penkabaru meteorology station Slamet Riyadi said here, Sunday.
Riau has had no hotspots over the past few days partly thanks to rains that have helped put out peatland fires.
Recently, Environmental Affairs and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya said the number of hotspots across Indonesia reached 2,356 hotspots this year, a decrease by 70 to 90 percent from 8,247 in the previous year.
In Riau Province, there were 1,292 hotspots last year, and it went down to 317 this year.
In Central Kalimantan, the number of hotspot reached 56 this year, drastic decrease from 1,137 hotspots last year.
"The hotspot decrease is thanks to incessant efforts of the integrated team (of fire fighting task force comprising military, police personnel and civilians) in the fields," the minister said.
