Nine Hotspots Detected in Riau

Pekanbaru, Riau, Feb 4 (Antaranews Riau) - The Terra and Aqua satellites detected nine hotspots indicating forest fires in Riau Province, on Monday.

Four hotspots were respectively found in Bengkalis and Pelalawan Districts, and one in Indragiri Hilir District, the Pakanbaru meteorology station said here, Monday.

Four hotspots in Bengkalis and two in Pelalawan were believed to have an accuracy rate at 70 percent.

The Riau authorities have battled fires razing forest and plantation areas in Dumai, near Bengkalis, since the past three days.

"The fires have razed for the last three days and gutted a total area of 10 hectares," Budi, a local fire fighter, said.

Strong wind and difficult terrain have hampered the fire fighting efforts.

The wildfires gutted forest area, bushes, and oil palm plantation area located deep inside the forest.
