Pekanbaru, Riau, June 3 (Antarariau.com) - The meteorology, climatology and geophysics station in Pekanbaru detected 15 hotspots indicating forest and plantation fires in Riau Province on Friday.
"The hotspots detected by Terra and Aqua Satellites at 6 a.m. local time are located in six districts in Riau," the station s head, Sugarin, noted.
Five hotspots were found in Indragiri Hilir District, three each in Meranti and Pelalawan, two in Siak, and one each in Bengkalis and Rokan Hilir.
Riau is now experiencing dry season.
The local administration is working with military and police officers to build thousands of small canals in peatland areas to prevent forest fires.
