Police to Launch Main Operations in 14 Provinces: Police Chief

Pekanbaru, Riau, (Antarariau.com) - The National Police will launch main security operations in 14 provinces during the 2013 Christmas and 2014 New Year celebrations, National Police Chief Gen. Sutarman said.

In his written statement read out by Riau Governor Djohermansyah Djohan during a Christmas and New Year pacification roll-call here on Sunday, Sutarman said the operation would be divided into two zones.

Code named 'Operasi Lilin' or Candle Light Operation, the operations will take place in Priority I and Priority II regions.

Priority I regions included 14 provinces or 14 Regional Police Commands while Priority II regions covered 17 provinces or regional Police Commands.

The 14 Regional Police Commands included those overlooking Jakarta, East Java, North Sumatra and a number of police commands in Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

Priority II regions included Lampung, Riau and a number of regions in Java, Kalimantan and South Sulawesi.

Earlier in Jakarta, the Head of the Public Information Bureau at the National Police's Public Relations Division, Brigadier General Boy Rafli Amar mentioned provinces included in the 14 priority I regions.

Boy said Priority I region cover 14 regional police commands overlooking the provinces of North Sumatra, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, East Kalimantan, Papua, Yogyakarta, East Nusa Tenggara, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, Maluku and Central Kalimantan.

The National Police will deploy more than 92,000 personnel during the candle light operatios.

"The police will be assisted by 16,982 military personnel in maintaining security and public order," General Sutarman said.
