Pekanbaru, Riau (Antarariau.com)- NASA s Terra and Aqua Satellites detected only six hotspots in three provinces on Sumatra Island on Tuesday morning.
Of the six hotspots, four were found in North Sumatra, and one each in South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung, and Slamet Riyadi, according to the spokesman for the Pekanbaru meteorology station.
The number significantly dropped from 12 on the previous day, he added.
Riau Province, which had experienced forest fires that produced haze over the past 18 years, had no hotspots on early Tuesday.
A forest fire emergency status war declared in Riau earlier this year. The alert will remain in effect until November to ensure maximum efforts remain in place to fight forest fires.
From January until September this year, 3,743 hectares of forest, peatland and plantation areas had been gutted by fires, and 93 people have been named as suspects in setting fires, including PT WSSI and PT SSP companies.
The number of hotspots on Sumatra Island has been fluctuating, because this year s dry season on the island has been uncharacteristically wet due to the La Nina phenomenon.
