Pekanbaru, Riau, Dec 6 (ANTARA) - Four illegal Afghan immigrants who escaped from the Immigration Detention Center in Pekanbaru were arrested by Police at the request of the local Immigration Office.

"We got back four of the escapees by cooperating with the Police," the head of the Immigration Detention Center (Rudenim) of Pekanbaru, Yanizur, said here Monday.

Previously, one of the escaped immigrants, Muhammad Jalile (28), who appeared to be hiding in the bushes near the detention house was arrested on Sunday at 02.00 a.m. local time.

The other three immigrants caught next were Juna Khan Razanee, Azan Agha, and Abdul Rauf.

"They were caught in a swamp area in Bukit Raya. I thank people who gave information on the whereabouts of the immigrants," he said.

Twenty eight Afghan immigrants had managed to escape from the detention house in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, by digging a hole on Saturday night (Dec 4).

The recently arrested immigrants said that they were assisted by a human smuggling syndicate to escape from the detention house.

"They would be taken to Medan by the syndicate which we are still pursuing," Yanizur said.

According to Yanizur, the escaped immigrants were seeking asylum in Australia. A people smuggling syndicate might have persuaded the immigrants to leave their country due to the endless war there.

The detention house's management had tightened the regulations in the detention house by always locking the cell doors and the prisoners room to anticipate further possible escapes as the regulation was not so tight previously, enabling the prisoners to wander around quite freely. The immigrants usually got together in the hall and their cells were not locked until midnight, he said.

The immigrants could escape from the detention house due to the loose regulations, he said, adding that the detention house management was now cooperating with the local police to guard the detention house.
