Pekanbaru, Riau, Oct 5 (antarariau.com) - An NOAA Satellite spotted 21 forest fires hotspots in five provinces on Sumatra Island on Saturday.

Agus Wibowo, an official with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), quoting NOAA's data, said most of the hotspots were seen in Bangka Belitung and South Sumatra Provinces.

Bangka Belitung had seven hotspots, including three in South Bangka District, two in East Belitung, and one each in Bangka and West Bangka Districts, said Agus.

In South Sumatra, hotspots were found in four districts, including three in Muara Enim, two in Banyu Asin, and one each in Musi Banyuasin and Ogan Komelir Ilir.

Other Sumatran provinces affected by forest fires are Riau, Jambi and North Sumatra.

In Riau, hotspots were found in Kampar, Pelalawan and Kuantan Sengingi Districts.

In Jambi, hotspots were detected in Sarolangun and Muaro Jambi Districts, though only one hotspot was seen in North Sumatra Provinces.

BNPB is currently monitoring these hotspots from land and air, Wibowo said.

Some of the fires had been set by those seeking to clear land for plantations or farming, which is against the law in Indonesia.
